Anne Frank (1929-1945) was a young German Jew whose diary has become the most familiar personal history of the Holocaust. In 1933, the Frank family escaped German persecution of Jews by fleeing to the Netherlands, but they were forced into hiding in 1942, after the Nazis occupied the country and began deporting Jews to concentration camps. For the next two years, the Franks hid in an attic in Amsterdam, and Anne Frank recorded her thoughts and hopes in her diary. On August 4, 1944, the Frank family was discovered and ultimately deported to Auschwitz. Anne's mother died in Auschwitz, and Anne and her sister died soon after in disease-ridden Bergen-Belsen. After the war, Anne's father returned to Amsterdam and published her diary.
